ABP Food Group is one of Europe’s leading food processors, providing quality beef to thousands of customers across the world. ABP as a company is a globally recognised brand, with 51 locations across Ireland, the UK and wider Europe all feeding into its £3bn annual turnover.

Perth remains their only Scottish site, and is responsible for producing quality Scotch Beef and 5th quarter products for UK based supermarkets and catering companies and for the European, Asian and African export market which accounts for around 10% of annual turnover.

ABP has invested substantially in its Perth site since they took over ownership in 1998. In the past decade they have invested circa £10million, resulting in a 25% uplift in processing and bringing employment and development opportunities to 300 people locally.

The Perth site procures its 1500 cattle each week from across Scotland, from its 1300 farmer suppliers located in Orkney to the Borders, with the majority of cattle travelling less than 100 miles to reach the factory.

This important fact sits at the heart of their strong commitment to their Perth site.

“Perth is undoubtedly the ideal base for our Scottish factory, with the excellent road links making us an easy-to-reach option for our network of Scottish farmers and a central point for our substantial distribution chain across the UK.

Frank Ross, General Manager for ABP Perth, commented:

It is crucial to the integrity of our business that provenance and animal welfare is the forefront of any decisions we make, and that the environmental impact of our business and customers is minimised – ABP Perth currently operate with zero waste to landfill and the group is Carbon Trust Quadruple Accredited.

We deliver to own retail packing sites where they cut and pack for major retailers as well as us directly supplying catering butchers and export customers. 75% of our volume business is generated through the retail sector.

Future Investment in Perth

Over the next 3 years ABP will release £14 million of capital investment – supported in part by SRDP funding – which will see the footprint of the site expand, bringing additional warehousing and dispatching space, an increase to the boning facility which will include a third line and a major upgrade of the refrigeration system.

Additionally, new employee facilities will allow for a better staff experience and provide more space for the 20% increase in employee numbers that the expansion will bring to allow the site to work to capacity.
