The Perth Card 2021 Update

PKC invests in upgrade of local gift card scheme as part of their recovery programme for local retail

Perth & Kinross Council has invested in an upgrade for the award-winning Perth Gift Card which will see the long-standing local currency programme deliver online sales opportunities for local business.

Launched in April 2021, the new cards will allow recipients to spend online and in store with over 90 independent businesses and visitor attractions. In doing so, this could release a potential £41,000 of instant spend into the local economy as well as bolstering the love local message longer term.

Miconex, the Perth-based fintech company behind the programme, reported that over £1.9 million was spent through Town and City Gift Card programmes in 2020, providing evidence that consumers are turning to local, multi-venue gift card programmes in a bid to support small businesses. The 2020 sales data represents 350% year-on-year growth.

The decision to upgrade the Perth programme to include an online option has been brought forward following the devastating impact of lockdown on local retail. And in order to provide a much-needed boost, PKC has launched a campaign to encourage anyone in possession of an old card, to swap it for a new card.

Subsidised by PKC to allow businesses to participate for free, as well as offering online buying opportunities, the new upgrade has also provided existing card holders with an additional 12-month redemption period.

Emily Queen, City and Town Centre Management Officer for PKC commented, "With lockdown frustrating the typical rate of redemption, there is currently £41,000 of unspent value held on live cards in circulation.

“The upcoming campaign will encourage these card holders to swap old for new, giving them the ability to spend online or in store and offering a fresh 12-month window of opportunity to spend.”

The card can be redeemed in over 90 city centre businesses including retailers, restaurants, takeaways and visitor attractions.
